Before you start
- A smart device. Only download myID from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
- A personal email address you will keep using. Do not use a shared or work email.
- You must be 15 or older. Some government services have their own age limits.
Three steps
- Download the myID app. If you have used myID before, choose that option and follow the prompts.
- Enter your email address, create a password, and enter your full name and date of birth.
- Choose your identity strength. After entering your details you have Basic strength.
Identity strength
Each online service has a minimum identity strength. You do not need to verify your photo if you already meet the minimum for the service you want.
| Strength | What you verify | What it allows |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | Your personal details only | Limited participating government services |
| Standard | Any 2 Australian documents from the list below | Most participating government services |
| Strong | Australian documents plus a photo check (Australian passport, or a Western Australian drivers licence) | All participating government services |
Documents for Standard strength
Your name generally needs to match on both documents. If you have changed your name, you may be able to verify it with a change of name certificate (ACT, NT, SA and Tas only) or a marriage certificate.
A passport cannot be verified online if it has been cancelled (replaced, reported lost or stolen), expired more than 3 years ago, or is not Australian. If you have renewed your passport, verify the new one.
- Australian passport, current or expired no more than 3 years
- Drivers licence or learner's permit
- Birth certificate
- Visa, using your foreign passport
- ImmiCard
- Citizenship certificate
- Medicare card (offered after you verify one of the documents above)
myID and myGov are different
myID proves who you are online. myGov is where you access government services. You can connect your myID to your myGov account and use it to sign in.
Common questions
Do I need Strong identity strength?
Only if the service you want requires it. Each service has a minimum identity strength; check it before verifying more documents.
Can I use my work email?
myID says to use a personal email address you have ongoing access to, not a shared or work address.
