Choose your route
If you have done nationally recognised training since 2015, you may already have a USI. You only need one, so check before creating another.
| Your situation | Start here |
|---|---|
| USI already linked to myGov | Sign in to myGov and view your USI. |
| Not linked to myGov | Use Forgotten USI in the USI Student Portal. |
| You want to link it now | In myGov, link the USI and choose I don't know my USI. |
| The portal cannot find you | Call the USI contact centre. |
Find it in the Student Portal
- Open the Student Portal from the official Find your USI page.
- Agree to the terms and conditions and select Next.
- Select Forgotten USI.
- Choose how to verify yourself and enter details that match your USI account.
- Once verified, your USI is sent to you.
Ways to verify yourself
The details you enter must match the information on your USI account. Your USI is a 10-character mix of letters and numbers.
- Email address
- Mobile number
- Personal details and security question answers
- Personal details and an identification document
Link your USI to myGov without knowing the number
You need an active USI account, which means a password and security questions are already set up. Without a myGov account, use the Student Portal instead.
- Sign in to myGov and select View and link services.
- Select Link on the Unique Student Identifier tile.
- Select I don't know my USI and enter your personal details.
- Enter the 6-digit code sent to the mobile or email on your USI account, then select Next.
If you still cannot find it
Call the USI contact centre on 1300 857 536, or +61 2 6218 0994 from outside Australia. It is open 8:30am to 4:30pm Australian Central time (ACST/ACDT), Monday to Friday, except national and South Australian public holidays.
The USI team cannot action account holder requests by email. Interpreter help can be arranged during contact centre hours.
Protect your account
Type my.gov.au into your browser or use the official myGov app, as fake sites and apps exist. Never share your USI password.
Common questions
Is a forgotten USI the same as a forgotten password?
No. A forgotten password has its own reset page with 4 options. An emailed reset link is only active for 10 minutes.
Can my training provider look up my USI?
Providers need your permission to search for it unless you have already given them access to your USI account. You get an email or SMS when a provider has searched and confirmed your USI.
