Choose your route
This guide is for a TFN you already have. It does not cover first applications or tax obligations.
| Your situation | Start here |
|---|---|
| ATO linked | Use the account steps below. |
| ATO not linked | Follow Other ways in the government TFN guide. |
| Cannot sign in | Use myGov sign-in help for your access problem. |
Find the number in your linked account
You need access to your existing myGov account with the ATO linked.
- Type my.gov.au into your browser to open the official service.
- Sign in and select Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
- Select Find my TFN to view your number.
If the linked-account route is unavailable
For alternatives to linked access, open Other ways on the government TFN page and follow its ATO link.
For a forgotten username or password, use the matching recovery option on the sign-in page. A locked account has a separate unlock process. Follow the official sign-in help rather than repeatedly guessing your details.
Keep your details out of messages and public posts
Use the official app or enter my.gov.au directly. Do not respond to doubtful unsolicited messages claiming to be from the ATO or myGov.
If a scammer may have accessed your linked ATO service, contact that service. Contact your bank if you shared bank or card details. The myGov scam guide explains account security and identity support.
Common questions
Should I apply again because I have forgotten my TFN?
No. Use the retrieval route for your existing number; the government guide says to apply only once.
What if I can sign in but cannot see the ATO?
These steps require the ATO to be linked. For other ways to find your number, follow the ATO link under Other ways on the official TFN page.
